Barytes Minerals

Name and Composition - Heavy spar: BaSO4 (Barium Sulphate).

Physical Properties - Barytes occurs as white, yellow, brownish white coloured, crystalline, granular to massive mineral. It is a heavy mineral with Sp.gr. 4.50.

Mode of Occurrence - Barytes mineralization is found associated with igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. It occurs as veins, cavity filings, bedded and residual deposit.

Uses - It is a source of barium metal. Barytes is used as weighting agent in oil well drilling mud, also used for manufacturing barium chemicals; as filler, extender in rubber, glass, paper, ceramics and paints; in coal washries, asbestos products (auto brake lining and other frictional materials), for construction of reactor shield etc.
