Dolomite Minerals
Name and Composition - Carbonate of calcium and magnesium: Ca Mg(CO3)2. Also called pearl–spar. When MgO is about 21.7% and SiO2 is less than 2 %, it is of SMS grade.
Physical Properties - White to yellowish, brown coloured, fine to coarse grained, mono-mineralic rock. Grains are generally rhombohedral, hardness is 3.5-4.0 and sp.gr.is 2.86.
Mode of Occurrence - Occurs as massive and bedded rock of metamorphic and sedimentary origin.
Uses - It is used as a flux in iron ore smelting, refractories, for manufacturing of high magnesium lime paper, glass, soil conditioning, chemical and fertilizers; as filler in paint, varnishes and hardening reagent in rubber goods. It is also used as an ore of magnesium; in manufacturing of beverages, in coal mines.
Mineral based Industries – Dolomite based industries like crushing & pulverizing units, chips making units, chemical plants.
Industrial Prospects – Crushers and refractory industries.
